A YOUNG ADULT AND MIDDLE GRADE FICTION WORKSHOP

COURSE DESCRIPTION

"YA" is not a genre, exactly; yet writing young adult fiction makes genre-like demands on the writer.  YA has its own distinct possibilities for voice, style, plotting, dialogue, characters, and even settings.  In this workshop we’ll explore the core elements of writing young adult and middle grade fiction. 

We’ll begin by identifying what is unique and special about YA; through discussion and focused exercises we’ll develop our own YA voices and characters; by engaging in brief critiques we’ll hone our craft.  We’ll also look at the business of writing YA, current trends, and the publishing industry.  

This workshop is a perfect foundational experience for beginners, but will also help focus those who have developed pieces and are looking to refine their work.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Sarah Prineas is an American fantasy author widely known for her young adult and middle grade fiction. Prineas has sold more than 500,000 copies of her books worldwide. Her first novel The Magic Thief was published in 2008 by HarperCollins in the United States with foreign rights sold to thirteen additional countries. The sequel, The Magic Thief: Lost came out in 2009 and a third book,The Magic Thief: Found came out in 2010. 
Prineas is considered one of the premier authors in the YA/MG category and maintains a loyal tribe of readers and writers across the globe.
