WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Writers are thinkers who translate their experiences and interpretations of the world into language in original, personal ways. Emphasizing the importance of a writer’s personal experience as part of finding voice begins with understanding how we think about and inhabit the world at all. This workshop offers tools for thinking about life, distinguishing as four different narrative perspectives and writing approaches. Each of the four styles offer unique benefits to writers, especially in terms of creating scenes and characters, connecting this process back to a writer’s most basic source: his or her own voice.
Each portion of the workshop provides students with key takeaway points and exercises to continue developing their habits of perception (either experiential or imagined) and ways of reconstructing those perceptions as terms of prose. Throughout the workshop, students will write and refine a small draft of writing from multiple angles, developing a dynamic set of options for approaching the creative writing process as a cumulative, upward spiral built on original moments of self-understanding. As a final step, students will apply the writer’s arc to the editing process, allowing them to learn detours around writing blocks, and rounding out their now-full toolbox of new writing techniques.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Daniel Boscaljon received a Ph.D. in English and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Iowa with an emphasis in narrative theory, interpretation theory, and continental philosophy. Currently the founder and director of the Center for Humanist Inquiries where he teaches interdisciplinary courses, Daniel was an award-winning instructor at the University of Iowa and has also taught for Mt. Mercy University and Hamilton College. His focus in teaching is to invigorate a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world, disrupting habits of thinking in order to reawaken a sensitivity to the world as a place filled with marvelous occurrences.
