ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
Voice is a writer’s calling card, a strategy for connecting with readers and engaging them in your story. This three-day workshop will focus on creating a narrative “I” that both is and isn’t you, a character version of the complex self who lives your stories. We’ll focus on elements of craft, from word choice to sentence structures to gauging narrative distance, in order to help you craft a voice that can carry a memoir—short, long, or in between. Daily discussion topics will include form, organization, and approaches to the writing process from drafting to final revision.
Participants will generate new material as well as have the opportunity to edit and revise existing works. (However, bringing existing work is not required.) The workshop is designed as a transformative experience for both beginning and seasoned writers.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Michele Morano is the author of the travel memoir Grammar Lessons: Translating a Life in Spain. Her work has appeared in many journals and anthologies, including Best American Essays, I'll Tell You Mine: Thirty years of Essays from the Iowa Nonfiction Writing Program, and the forthcoming Waveform: Twenty-First Century Essays by Women. She directs the graduate program in writing and publishing at DePaul University in Chicago.
